SHORT BIOGRAPHY OF PROBATE JUDGE JOHN E. ENSLEN

Spouse and Family:  Judge Enslen is married to Dianne Brown Enslen, a native of Hartwell, Georgia.  The two of them met at Clemson University in the mid-1960ís where Dianne was a cheerleader and John was a football and basketball player.  They are the parents of six children (Georgia, Jacob, Joshua, Jessica, Jenny, and Joseph) and the grandparents of nineteen grandchildren.

Education:  Judge Enslen, a 7th generation Elmore Countian, graduated co-valedictorian of the Wetumpka High School Class of 1965; National Honor Society; Beta Club; Spanish Club; President of the Student Government Association; President of the Elmore County Student Government Association; Quarterback of two consecutive undefeated football teams; Lettered in football, basketball, tennis, golf, and track.

He was a Distinguished Military Graduate of Clemson University in 1969; Bachelorís Degree in Political Science and History; Chief Prosecutor of the Student Honor Court; Delta Kappa Alpha; Clemson Lettermen Association.

He graduated in the top 5% of his law school class at the University of Alabama Law School with a JD in 1972; Order of the Coif; Justice on the Student Honor Court; Editorial Board of the Alabama Law Review; Dean William Hepburn Scholarship Recipient; Study Abroad Scholarship Recipient, Sigma Delta Kappa.

He studied comparative law at the Institute for Mediterranean Studies in Rome, Italy, in 1971. 

Work Experience:  Pre-daylight willow grub counter for Frankís Bait Shop (1957-1958). 

Construction laborer, carpenter, brick layer, and dump truck driver for Mason Lanier, Tullis Lanier, Guy Brothers Construction, Harbert Construction, Blount Construction, Alabama Highway Department, and Roland Pugh Construction (summers of 1959-1966; 1970-1971).

Bible and Book Door-to-Door Salesman for Southwestern Company in Kentucky and Iowa (summers of 1966-1967)

Instructor of inmates in reading and writing at Draper Correctional Facility (summer 1969).    

First Lieutenant in the United States Army with duty assignments at Ft. Bragg, NC (ROTC Boot Camp 1967), and Ft. Benjamin Harrison, IN (1972) during the Viet Nam War.

Law Professor at Jones Law School, teaching night classes (1973-1974).

40 years a private practicing attorney, including 10 years as County Attorney for Elmore County; Past President of Montgomery Federal Bar Association; Past President of Elmore County Bar Association; Former Bar Commissioner for 19th Judicial Circuit (Elmore, Autauga, and Chilton Counties); Past President of the Alabama Chapter of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society; Past or Present Member of the Alabama Bar Association and the American Bar Association; Licensed to practice before all Alabama Courts; U. S. District Court for the Middle District of Alabama; 5th and 11th U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals; United States Supreme Court. 

Farmer with cow/calf herd and horses for more than 20 years; Elmore County Cattlemanís Association; Alabama Farmers Federation; Saw miller with Woodmizer Sawmill for 15 years.

Former Founder and Owner of Elmore County Abstract and Title Insurance Company; Former Co-Founder and Co-Owner of the Closing Outlet, a real estate closing and escrow services company.

Real Estate Developer and Manager for 35 years.

Board of Directors of Elmore County National Bank (later Aliant Bank).

Civic Activities and Honors:  Past President of the following five civic organizations:  Wetumpka Rotary Club (Paul Harris Fellow); Wetumpka Area Chamber of Commerce; Elmore County Childrens Home (co-founder and twice president); Wetumpka High School Stadium Foundation (founder);  Elmore County Chapter of American Heart Association.

Boy Scouts of America Troop Committee Member.

Past or Present Member of the Board of Directors of the following five organizations:  Edgewood Academy; Friends of Redland Elementary; Joe Sewell Scholarship Award; Elmore County Community Foundation; Wetumpka YMCA.

Past or Present  Member of American Legion; Probate Judges Association of Alabama; National College of Probate Judges; United Way; Elmore County Chapter of the Alabama Alumni Association; Alabama History Association; Elmore County Historical Society; Alabama Bench and Bar Historical Society.

Religious Affiliation:  Active member and Sunday school teacher in the Wetumpka congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  Judge Enslen and his wife Dianne, at their own expense, served a volunteer one year mission for their Church to Cambodia where they learned the language and established a new congregation in Siem Reap with more than 100 members- all former Buddhists.

Hobbies:  Hunting, fishing (especially with grandchildren), golfing, cutting firewood with chainsaw; gardening; family history research; playing piano and harmonica; researching and writing county and state history; and cooking camp stew and sweet potato pies.
