Logging Ordinance

Logging Ordinance Rev 11-2012

Logging License Inspectors Resolution

Instructions for Notice of Road Usage by Timber Owner

Logging Notice Form Rev Nov12.xlsx

Posted County Bridges Map

The Elmore County Commission recently voted to create a new logging notice system as authorized in Ala. Code § 23-1-80.1. This code section, enacted during the 2012 session of the Alabama Legislature, sets up guidelines so that timber owners and loggers will find greater consistency in requirements from one county to the next across the state.

This initiative was one supported and advocated by the Alabama Forestry Association and in cooperation with the Association of County Commissions of Alabama the legislation was formulated. As in all issues, no one side received all items that they would have desired, but the resulting legislation and its byproduct, the County’s Logging Ordinance, are a compromise to protect the safety of the citizens of each County and the county road and bridge system that the industry utilizes to deliver its products to market.

The Elmore County Public Works Department's operating hours are Monday through Thursday, 6:00 am to 4:30 pm. This department is over our joint city and county Collection Facility, details on the Environmental page.

Any citizen who has a problem or request for maintenance on the county road system is encouraged to contact the Elmore County Public Works Department at (334) 567-1162.

After hours, non-emergency requests can be left on the department’s answering service. Emergency requests can be made by calling the Elmore County Sheriff's Dispatch at (334) 567-5441. The Dispatch Office forwards all requests or notifications to the Public Works Department’s on call personnel to address the problem.

Roadside Memorial Application

The Elmore County Commission (County) will allow immediate family members to apply for a new, standard roadside memorial sign to honor loved ones who were lost in a traffic crash on a county road. The standard signage may include the loved one’s name or if anonymous identification is desired, the phrase “A LOVED ONE” will be used. No variations to the signage will be permitted.

Immediate family members (parents, children, spouse, siblings, grandparents or grandchildren) may request the memorial sign by filling out an application at the Elmore County Public Works Department. The application must be accompanied by a copy of the accident report issued by the appropriate law enforcement agency (Alabama Department of Public Safety in most all cases). A fee of $100 must accompany the application to cover the cost of fabricating, erecting and maintaining the sign.

Applications for memorial signage shall be made within two years of the date of the crash. Signage will remain in place for three (3) years. Near the end of the three (3) year time frame, the immediate family members may request ownership of the sign(s) provided this is done prior to the County removing the sign from the County right-of-way.

Only one sign will be erected. In the case of multiple victims, additional plaques or a larger plaque shall be used to display the names. In the event of conflicting wishes among immediate family members, no sign will be erected or the sign will be removed if it is already in place. No refund of the fee will be made in cases where the sign has already been fabricated and/or erected.

Signs will be installed at the approximate location of the crash site. However, signs will not be placed in front of a residence or business and cannot create a distraction from traffic control devices. The County reserves the right to temporarily remove or relocate the sign at any time for maintenance and construction activities. The Elmore County Engineer shall ultimately have the authority to determine the appropriate location for the requested signage.

No signs will be erected for victims who were directly involved in criminal activity that led to their deaths, such as DUI, reckless driving, fleeing law enforcement officers, etc.

The roadside memorial sign shall be constructed and installed by the County. No other roadside decorations or ornaments will be allowed. There shall be no roadside activities associated with the memorial on the County right-of-way. If the signage results in safety issues for the traveling public or county personnel, the County will remove the signage from the County right-of-way.

Adopted by the Elmore County Commission on 9th day of February, 2015.
